Metropolitan, why we should embrace farming.

Paying 8X for anything is beyond ridiculous. In my previous blog I met Red,Seedy,Watery,Sweet in the Bronx . I expressed how astonished I was with the pricing of watermelon in the Bronx. That was just one example. The more exotic the fruit, the pricier the ticket. The term organic also comes with a ginormous price tag. If the food item becomes a fad backed by an influencer the price also skyrockets. Living in a big city where the eco system is based on a ‘free-market’ approach, there are buyers at various price points.

A kitchen garden, backyard garden, school garden or even hydroponic farming can be created to alleviate price gouging. My Facebook friend turned his restroom/ bathroom in addition to his fish tanks into hydroponic farms. He grew lettuce. I found his approach interesting and he would boast about his production. Presently, one head of lettuce ranges $2.00 to $4.00. I will seek his permission for pictures and update you the post if he says yes.

The AMNY posted an article on June 4, 2018 written by Lisa L. Colangelo, ‘Bronx teens create hydroponic farm to grow 25000 pounds of produce a year. Can you imagine the savings involved? My ‘guesstimation’ is that if this same principle was applied to I met Red,Seedy,Watery,Sweet in the Bronx article and say that the cost to produce the watermelon was 40% with a selling price of $2.99 then, $44,850 would be profit (if all items were qualified for sale).

Home centers, supermarkets, garden supply stores in the Bronx supplies seeds and seedlings/ suckers. Herbs such as mint, rosemary and dill are great options for a kitchen farm/garden. The intention is to produce our own, ultimately decreasing demand to balance out pricing. To be more strategic each family/ friend chose a fruit/herb/ vegetable to produce and we barter like the good old days.

The soil is fertile, I will post pictures of backyard farms in the Bronx soon. Do you practice any farming? I would love to hear your story.
